    • 9 January 1826, Merrimack County New Hampshire probate record #343, contains a hand-written note from Willoughby Colby requesting Judge Maxwell appoint David White, Esq., of Bow, as guardian of his children.

      10 January 1826, David White is appointed guardian of George, Moses, Eri, and Willabey Colby.

      24 February 1835, Willabey requests the court to appoint a new guardian for Eri, under age 14 years, and George and Moses, above age 14 years, due to the death of David White. The court appointed Reuben Colby as guardian of the three children.

    Willaby Colby
    Willaby was born in 1795 and lived at the intersection of Grandview and Logging Hill Roads. He served on the committee that supervised building the Bow Bog Meeting House in 1835. In 1860, he opened a blacksmith shop at Bow Mills.

    This photograph shows the blacksmith shop at Bow Mills, operated by Willaby Colby. The shop was on the west side, at the foot of Logging Hill Road, as shown in 1958. In the background is the Frank Colby family home. Grandview Road goes off to the left and Logging Hill Road to the right. It was opened in 1860 and was in operation into the 1920s. The area is now part of the Interstate 89 loop.

    • Be it known that I, Willibey Colby, of Bow, in the county of Merrimack and State of New Hampshire, being of sound mind and memory, thanks be to Almighty God for the same, do hereby publish and declare this my last will and testament in manner following, to wit:

      First, to my eldest son George Colby, I give and bequeath the sum of five dollars.

      Second, to my second son, Moses Colby, I give and bequeath the sum of five dollars.

      Third, to my third son, Eri Colby, I give and bequeath the sum of one hundred dollars.

      Fourth, To my fourth son, Amos Colby, I give and bequeath the sum of five dollars.

      Fifth, to my sixth son, Willabey Colby, jr., I give and bequeath the sum of five dollars.

      Sixth, to my eldest daughter, Lucinda Bond, wife of John R. Bond, I give and bequeath the sum of forty five dollars.

      Seventh, to my second daughter, Betty M. Colby, I give and bequeath the sum of seventy five dollars. She shall also have a home and board free of expenses so long as she remains upon my homestead, single and unmarried, but no longer.

      Eighth, all the rest residue and remainder of my estate both real and personal, after the payment of all debts due at my decease, I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Betsey Colby during her natural life, and at her decease I give and devise the same to my fifth son, Irad Colby, provided he remains with my said wife upon my homestead farm, and carries on the same for her and gives her a support and maintenance to her satisfaction, from the proceeds of the same.

      And I hereby constitute and appoint my said wife Betsey Colby sole Executrix of this will and testament.

      In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal, this fifth day of August 1854. /s/ Willabey Colby.
