    • Paul Harvey Pumphrey, 81, passed away peacefully on March 19 at his home in Bella Vista, Ark., following a valiant struggle against myasthenia gravis.

      Paul was born Nov. 11, 1929 at Fairfield, Neb. the son of Floyd Douglas Pumphrey and Mabel Clare (Metcalf) Pumphrey. The family moved to the Lyman area where Paul graduated from high school.

      Paul attended the University of Nebraska graduating with a B.S. in Agricultural Science. He was employed by Great Western Sugar in Gering and Mitchell and the family lived in those communities.

      He served in the United States Army and the National Guard for a combined service record of 32 years, retiring as a Major. In Arkansas he was a member of the Lakers Golf Group, the State Line Wood Turners and a faithful member of Highlands Church. He enjoyed his family, gardening, and his loyal canine companion, Kelly.

      Leaving to cherish his memory is his beloved wife of 59 years: Mary Vesta (Gieseker) Pumphrey; sons: Ron Pumphrey and wife Mary Ann of San Jose, Calif. and Robert Pumphrey of Aurora, Colo.; daughters: Linda Pumphrey of Omaha and Lorna Pumphrey of Bentonville, Ark.; two grandchildren: Lara Pumphrey-Grimes and her husband Aaron Grimes, and Aimy Pumphrey. He is also survived by siblings: Dwight Pumphrey and wife Pat, Vane Pumphrey and Mary Edith (Pumphrey) Soloman; and many nieces and nephews.

      He was preceded in death by his parents and brother: Walter.
