    • Jane Isabelle Broderick Buddeke, 88, died Oct. 30, 2004, quietly in the home of her son, John Buddeke, in Portland, Ore.

      Jane was born June 28, 1916, in Mandan, to Genevieve Stapleton Metcalf and Leo Charles Broderick. She graduated from Mandan High School in 1934, and attended Saint Catherine's College in St. Paul, Minn. After college, she worked for Mr. Gronvold in North Dakota Workman's Compensation prior to her move to Lincoln, Neb. There she continued to worked and attend college.

      In May of 1941, Jane went to Washington, D.C., where she worked for the Navy. Upon meeting John Buddeke "Bud", who attended Georgetown University, she returned home to prepare for a December wedding. On Dec. 7, 1941, war was declared and their future took a sharp turn. They were married Dec. 27, 1941, in St. Joseph's Church, Mandan, and then returned to Washington D.C. Shortly after their marriage, Jane and Bud were sent to Panama with the Navy. Jane was in charge of the Panama Radar Department. Upon returning to the states in 1945, Jane and Bud moved to San Francisco, where Jane continued to work for the Navy as a secretary to Admiral Trexal and Admiral Moeller. After retiring from the Navy, Jane and her husband moved to Palo Alto, Calif., where Jane assisted in the preparation of thesis work for graduate students at Stanford University. Jane was active for most of her 88 years.

      Jane was preceded in death by her parents, Leo and Genevieve Broderick; her husband John Buddeke; her son Joseph Budekke; her brothers, Dr. William Broderick and John Broderick; her sisters Marjorie Broderick Brumbaugh and Florence Broderick Craychee.

      Jane is survived by her sister, Mary Broderick Harris; and her son, John Buddeke.
