  • Notes
    • Hosea Frederick Corliss was two years old when his father was killed when hit by a train crossing the railroad tracks in Hudson, New Hampshire. Hosea's mother struggled to support the children alone. She re-married in 1885, to a widower who reportedly also had seven children, and who also died five years later. In about 1889, Hosea was farmed out to live and work about 50 miles away on the Little farm on Little Hill in Webster, New Hampshire. Whether other children were sent away for work is unknown.

Hosea never moved back to Hudson, and on 4 May 1903, he purchased land in Hopkinton from Charles E and Mattie B. Little for $600 as documented in Merrimack County deeds. The tracts are described as near each other on land beside the highway leading from Tyler Bridge to Webster and at the town line between Hopkinton and Webster. On the same date is a second deed describing these three tracts and two more, purchased from Charles E. Little for $300. Yet a third document describes these second two parcels as 10 acres more or less, and includes a statement by Mattie E. Little, releasing her right of dower in said premises. The discharge on the mortgage to Charles and Mattie Little was recorded 10 July 1908.

    • On 9 June 1913, nine days before his marriage, Hosea secured a $100 mortgage on the first three tracts with the Loan and Trust Savings Bank. The discharge on this loan was recorded on 30 January 1920.

    • Family legend is that Hosea met his bride when Elizabeth, then a well-bred lady from Massachusetts, came by train to vacation at the Pearson farm near the fairgrounds in Hopkinton. Hosea drove hay wagons there to entertain vacationers there and supplement his farm income. Their daughter Lorraine said Hosea moved to Massachusetts for a couple years to court Elizabeth, driving horse-drawn trolleys for wages while supporting his youngest sister, Ella, as she attended bookkeeping school there. Hosea and Elizabeth were married 18 June 1913 in Everett, Massachusetts by Ansel E. Johnson, clergyman.

    • Hosea signed a World War I draft registration card, serial number 1714, order number A2336, citing his name as Hosea Frederick Corliss with an address of Contoocook, Merrimack, NH. He is age 38, born June 24, 1880, white, a US citizen, self employed, and occupation is farmer. He lists his nearest relative as Mrs. Elizabeth D. Corliss of the same address.

    • On 13 January 1920, Hosea purchased a 90-acre parcel (known as Ox Pond) from Mary E.B. Sanborn; the document includes her husband, Smith B. Sanborn, relinquishing his "right of courtesy" in the property. Also recorded on this date is a $700 mortgage from the Federal Land Bank of Springfield that includes a description of all six parcels. The mortgage note was discharged on 16 October 1944, and recorded 13 February 1945. This was the farm on Tyler Road at the Blackwater River where Hosea and Elizabeth lived their lives.

    • Hosea signed a 1942 World War II draft registration card, serial number U1269, listing his residence as Blackwater District, Hopkinton, Merrimack, NH. He is age 61, born Hudson on June 24th, 1880, he is self employed, and lists his contact person as Mrs. Elizabeth Corliss, Route 1, Contoocook, NH.

    • Hosea and Elizabeth lived their lives on the Tyler Road farm. In their late 70's, they lived the winters together in the home of their son, Richard Corliss, on Deer Meadow Road in Webster, New Hampshire, returning to their Contoocook farm during the warmer months. In the last year of Hosea's life, he and Elizabeth moved into rooms of their own in a nursing home run by their daughter, Lorraine, in Massachusetts. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at Lorraine's home in Saugus, Massachusetts, surrounded by their surviving children, grandchildren, and Elizabeth's sisters Grace, Bella, and Frances. Shortly after the anniversary celebration, Hosea returned to Richard's farm, telling Richard's wife Vivian upon his arrival that this was not just a visit, but that he had come home to die. He was felled by a heart attack early one morning in mid July, and died within the week at Concord Hospital. Hosea is remembered by his children as being very strict and loving, and all his grandchildren as a gentle, kind man, with a wry sense of humor.

    • A fiduciary deed of 15 February 1967 records the sale of Hosea's farm for $5,500 to Paul and Lorraine Greenleaf. The sale was completed by Malcolme P. Corliss, administrator, who was Hosea's eldest surviving son.

    • "Vital Records of Hudson, NH 1734-1985" incorrectly records his name as "Moses F." born on the same day in 1881.
