  • Notes
    • Lorraine's obituary, Concord Monitor, Concord, New Hampshire, November 2, 2006: Lorraine Spooner. Nurse for 50 years.
CONTOOCOOK - Lorraine Spooner, 87, died Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2006, at Elliot Hospital in Manchester.
Her brother Richard Corliss, a lifelong resident of Webster, died at Concord Hospital only eight hours before her. The last of their generation, they were both extremely independent spirits and greatly loved by their families.
She was born in 1919, the daughter of Hosea Frederick and Elizabeth Dunmore (Hayes) Corliss. She was raised during the Great Depression on a small farm and loved to tell about the excitement in her home the day that electricity was installed and they flicked a light bulb on for the first time. Times were tough when Mrs. Spooner was a young girl, so she periodically lived with her aunts in Reading, Mass., and Salem.
Mrs. Spooner trained as a nurse, which became her lifelong occupation. She worked in Boston-area hospitals during the 1940s and '50s. In the 1960s, she worked at a nursing home in Saugus, Mass., where she raised her three children.
On a wage of 90 cents per hour, she worked as much overtime as she could in order to purchase her own home. To make ends meet, she always worked a second job and she also invited two patients into her home for long-term care. For a period, she cared for her mother and father in her home.
In the late 1960s, she purchased a small nursing home in Lynn, Mass., which she operated for more than a decade. It became a family-run business, where the patients were treated like family.
Mrs. Spooner worked private duty care until she was 75 years old, when she retired to Florida with her second husband, Arthur Spooner of Bedford. Arthur, who died in 1992, became the best of friends with her brother Richard.
She was enormously proud that two of her brothers, Richard and Malcolm, served in Italy and the South Pacific during World War II. Her third brother, Noyes, died from rheumatic fever.
For the past six months, Mrs. Spooner resided at the Mapleleaf Nursing Home in Manchester, where she was treated for and fought hard against the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease. Prior to that, she lived independently on Loudon Road in Concord, where she enjoyed the company of many good friends.
Mrs. Spooner was divorced from her first husband, George Smith. She survived her second husband, Arthur Spooner, who died in the early 1990s. Her daughter, Paula Smith, died tragically of cancer four years ago at the age of 54.
Mrs. Spooner, the proud grandmother of eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, is also survived by her daughter, Sharon Sullivan Smith of Allenstown; and her son and daughter-in-law, Peter and Joanne Smith of Bedford.
Services for Lorraine and her brother Richard will be jointly held. Calling hours will be held Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. at Holt-Woodbury Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 825 Park Ave., Contoocook.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 1 p.m. at Contoocook United Methodist Church on Maple Street in Contoocook, where the Rev. Sammie Maxwell will officiate.
Burial will follow at Contoocook Village Cemetery.
A reception will follow at the Webster Grange Hall on Route 127 in Webster.
Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 10 Ferry St., No. 427B, Concord 03301.
