  • Notes
    • Richard George Hayes and Isabella R. Patterson were married by the Rev. Thos. Duncan. They lived on Dorchester Street in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada. Richard Hayes is listed in the 1880-1881 Charlottetown Directory as "engineer, P.E.I.R."

Richard was, by tradition, educated in London. Aunt Lorraine said his father was a boat captain, and first brought the family from Scotland to Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada. Since having found their marriage license in Charlottetown, perhaps he only brought Richard, or perhaps brought his own family there. I still need to research what other Hayes or Patterson families were living in Charlottetown then. The family moved to Chelsea, MA, in either late 1881 or early 1882 (Aunt Lorraine says Richard's father was again the captain of the ship) where they lived until about 1908 when the great Chelsea Fire wiped the family out. They then moved to Everett, Massachusetts.

Richard Marshall said he drove trains on PEI, but gave it up because of the wind in his face and moved to the United States. Aunt Lorraine said the family left because they'd lost two children due to the harsh climate on the island, although the census record of 1881 indicates they'd lost only one, Elizabeth, the first born. They gave this same name again to the next daughter.

Richard and Isabella's son, Walter, was baptised in at St. James Church, Charlottetown, on 21 July 1883. Their next child, Frances, was born 22 Feb 1884 in Chelsea, MA, so they must have emigrated to Massachusetts within those months. The 1900 census says they emigrated in 1882, so something is in conflict here.

Richard George Hayes is listed in the England & Wales FreeBMD Birth Index, 1837-1915 in the 1849 Year of Registration, Quarter of Oct-Nov-Dec, District Greenwich, County Greater London, Kent, London, volume 5, pg. 261.

Richard George Hayes's death certificate indicates the cause of death was "Suicide by pistol wound of abdomen." Aunt Lorraine said he learned he had Bright's Disease; dad said he had diabetes. His death certificate indicates his age was 63/6/13; his occupation as Stationery Engineer; his address and place of death was 64 Fremont Avenue in Everett, Massachusetts. The death certificate was signed by Thomas M. Durell, M.D., on March 13, 1913; the undertaker was T.L. Gouder & Son in Everett.

Find a way to see the London Times newspaper of 2 May 1865, pg. 14. May have Richard Hayes listed on ship list.
