  • Notes
    • "Corliss Currents," 2/96: Florence Haskell Corliss was educated at Smith College and did European vacations. "Florence became as astute observer of these broad horizons. Her interest in the literary arts was life-long and is documented in journals and letters. In a day when women rarely pursued degrees, Florence earned a master's degree in philosophy from Columbia University in 898 with a thesis entitled "A Criticism of Browning's Dramas From the Aristotelian Point of View: A Study in the Philosophy of Literature." She was quick-witted and had a natural joie de vivre that attracted the attentions of Thomas W. Lamont, then a Harvard student, who waited five years to marry her until he had firmly established himself first as a journalist and then as a businessman in New York City. Lamont in time became the chief executive officer of J.P. Morgan and Company on Wall Street, influencing U.S. Presidents and the American economy for nearly fifty years and engaging in international financial diplomacy. As a result of her husband's access to the world's leaders, Florence traveled widely, commented frequently on heer observations, and cultivated friendships with Britisn Poet Laureate John Masefield and other literary luminaries. Florence endears herself to your editor for her critique of hew New York City landlord of the time, Franklin Delano Roosevelt. While recognizing his charm, she found him patronizing of women whom, she sensed, he believed were not capable of complicated intellectual discussion. Those who would like to learn more about Florence are encouraged to read "The Ambassador From Wall Street: The Story of Thomas W. Lamont, J.P. Morgan's Chief Executive," published by Madison Books in Lanham, Maryland in 1994 and authored by Florence's grandson, Edward Miner Lamont. He includes many wonderful vignettes of her life among the powerful. In another issue we will describe the careers and contributions of Florence's children, one of whom was the renowned Corliss Lamont."

From Gail Reynolds's notes: Received a master's degree from Columbia University in June 1898 in philosophy. Her thesis was entitled, "A Criticism of Browning's Dramas from the Aristotelian Point of View: A Study in the Philosophy of Literature." She served on the boards of directors of the Foreign Policy Association, the League of Nations Association, the New School for Social Research, the Birth Control League of America, the Committee of International Coooperation, the Consumers League.
