  • Notes
    • Malcolm Hayes is listed in the Chelsea, Massachusetts directories of 1892 as boarding at 166 Arlington Street, Chelsea, and his occupation is cook.

Malcolm was in World War I. His Attestation Paper, No. 3231791, dated for the 2nd Depot PN 1st C.O.R., Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force is dated February 11, 1918 at Toronto, Canada. He lists his next of kin as his sister Mrs. Nellie Taylor, that he is single, his trade as cook, and his present address as 444 S. State Street, Chicago, Illinois, USA.

Malcolm P. Hayes is listed in the Chelsea, Massachusetts contributions to World War I, "C. Exp. F." which I think is Canadian Expeditionary Force.

Richard Marshall, his nephew, sent me a copy of a scroll, topped with a crest with a lion rampant on the left and a unicorn on the right, topped with a crown and "GV RI", that says: "He whom this scroll commemorates was numbered among those who, at the call of King and Country, left all that was dear to them, endured hardness, faced danger, and finally passed out of the sight of men by the path of duty and self-sacrifice, giving up their own lives that others might live in freedom. Let those who come after see to it that his name be not forgotten. Pte. Malcolm Hayes, Canadian Infantry Bn."

Canada CDF burial registers lists Malcolm Hayes, Private, No. 3231791, 3rd Battalion, HQ file #649-H-21147, religion is Presbyterian, died August 31, 1918, buried in Valley Cemetery, Vis-en-Artois, 7-1/4 miles southeast of Arras, France. Circumstances of casualty says, "He was killed by enemy shell fire whilst employed in carrying rations and water to the front line, during an attack on Upton Wood."
