  • Notes
    • "A Genealogical History of the Clark and Worth Families": THOMAS CHANDLER2, CAPTAIN (William1) was born in England ca 1630 and in 1645 was one of the early settlers of Andover, his name 23d on the list of names. There about 1650 he married Hannah, daughter of Thomas Brewer of Ipswich. He was constable of Andover in 1661-2; on the grand jury in 1664; and for years an officer of the Andover military company. He was a blacksmith and ironworker like all of the Chandlers and by 1678 was a wealthy man.

In 1658, Hopestill Tyler, a boy of 13, was apprenticed for a term of 9-1/2 years to Chandler who agreed "to teach him the trade of a blacksmith, to read the Bible and to write so far as to be able to keep a book so as to serve his turn or to keep a book for his trade, and to allow him meat, drink, washing, lodging and clothes." Young Hopestill set up his own shop in 1687, but his father, Job Tyler, carried on a ten-year controversy over the apprenticeship papers, once stealing them from the home of Nathan Parker who drew them up. Job evidently removed to Roxbury before 1665 when the Court ordered him to "nayle up or fasten up on the posts of the Andover and Roxbury meeting houses in a plain leadgible hand, the acknowledgement (that) he is a base lying, cozening, cheating knave and that he hath got his estate by cozening in a base deviling manner.... and most wickedly slandered Thomas Chandler." Jacob Preston was apprenticed to Chandler for seven years from 1671. Captain Chandler was Justice of the Peace in 1674 and 1679; a selectman in 1677, and representative to the General Court in 1678-9. When he died January 15, 1703, aet 73, he left his interest in the Iron Works on the Shawshin River to his sons. His widow died October 25, 1717, aet 87.

From "English Origins of New England Families, Vol. II": Capt. Thomas, of Andover, Mass., blacksmith and iron worker, bapt. 9 Aug. 1628; d. early in 1702/03; m. Hannah Brewer, who survived him and d. at Andover 25 Oct 1717, perhaps aged 87, and perhaps daughter of Daniel Brewer. He was brought to New England by his parents in 1637, was of Andover in 1645, and was a representative from Andover in the General Court in 1678 and 1679. His will, dated 13 Sept. 1700, was proved 8 Feb. 1702/03. Eight children."
