      He married Katherine _____. They had one son, John.

      He immigrated to New Jersey about 1684, where he settled at Perth Amboy.

      In 1687 his brother Robert deeded him 1/10th of a 1/48th share in East Jersey. In 1687 he and other leading proprietors conferred with the Governor of West Jersey relative to running the line between the twin provinces of East and West Jersey. In 1689 he was appointed Deputy Surveyor of the Province. In 1692 he became Receiver-General and, in 1692, the proprietors in England appointed him Receiver-General and Surveyor-General. He was elected a member of the General Assembly for Perth Amboy in 1692, and, in 1698, he was elected a representative for Middlesex County.

      He held numerous offices: Deputy Secretary and Register of the Province (1695), Commissioner of the Court of Small Debts (1696), Register of the Court of Chancery (1698), and Clerk of the Court of Commons Rights (1699), Town Clerk of Perth Amboy (1699, 1718).

      In 1701, he was one of the East Jersey proprietors who surrendered the Government to the Crown.

      His wife Katherine was buried at Perth Amboy, New Jersey 6 January 1703.

      He was a member of the first General Assembly of the new Province which convened in 1704. The same year he received commissioners of Receiver-General and Ranger-General of New Jersey. In 1709 he was arrested by [Lieut. Gov.] Richard Ingoldsby and charged with tampering with provincial records.

      He was appointed Clerk of the Governor's Council, 1714, Clerk of the Peace and Clerk of the Court of Common Pleas for Middlesex and Somerset Counties (1711, reappointed 1714), Justice of the Peace for Middlesex and Somerset Counties, 1713, and Surrogate of the Eastern Div. of New Jersey, 1716. He served as Warden of St. Peter's Church at Perth Amboy, 1718-1722, and Vestryman, 1730-1732.
