  • Notes
    • Letter from her daughter, Carolyn (Maggi) Meadows, 1/14/96: "In October, 1916, my mother purchased an eight-place burial lot in Woodlawn Cemetery in Everett... the total cost was $190. In this burial plot are Richard and Isabella Hayes, sons George and Malcolm; my father (Alfred Maggi); Mabel Hayes (Walter's wife), and my mother. Mother did mention three of her brothers--George, Malcolm, and Richard--who left home when she was still quite young.... She never mentioned the firstborn Elizabeth, but she died before my mother was born. My mother led an interesting life. Until she met my father, she was very much a "career girl." In June 1908, she graduated as an RN from Chelsea Memorial Hospital and in 1909 did postgraduate work at Boston Floating Hospital. From 1909 until 1913 she was the private surgical nurse for a prominent Boston surgeon. Then from 1913 to 1917, she was a supervisor at John Adams Hospital and studied pre-med at Boston University. Although she wanted to become a physician, she could not afford to continue with her studies and enlisted in the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps and served from February 1918 to June 1919. From 1919 to 1923 she was the owner of her own hospital at 185 Hancock St. in Everett. She was a school nurse for the City of Everett from 1923 to 1929 and resigned to marry. Widowed in 1938, she returned to nursing and was employed as a public health nurse, Everett Welfare Dept. from February 1939 to February 1950 (mandatory retirement at age 62). Not content to sit at home, she worked the 11 PM to 7 AM shift at a local nursing home. At the age of 85 she developed breast cancer, lived with us during the last five and one half years of her life, and in March 1980 died at the age of 91. She was quite a lady, a loving mother, and greatly missed. She was always ready to care for any family member who was ill and was indeed a humanitarian in all aspects of her life."
