    • Lost Fortune Restored By Adoption Of Child. Los Angeles Times, August 30, 1911:

Little Lucile Richmond Bedford, who was cut off with $10 by her wealthy grandmother because she did not like the child's father, will come into a fortune when she reaches her majority, according to a promise made to Judge Hutton by the foster mother when he permitted the girl to be adopted yesterday.

Lucie M. Lambourn, aunt of Lucille, who inherited all of her mother's estate, including the share which would have gone to the child but for the grandmother's aversion to the father, was permitted to adopt her niece.

Lucile was the granddaughter of Mrs. Susan Glassell Mitchell, who was the daughter of Andrew Glassell, one of California's early millionaires.

His father was Charles Bedford, who has been represented in court as not being thrifty. His wife divorced him several years ago on the ground that he had deserted her. She died in 1907.

Mrs. Mitchell died a short time later. Her demise was followed by a legal fight which is now being amicably settled. Her will gave her property to her daughter, Lucie M. Lambourn, cutting off the granddaughter for fear that Bedford would succeed to what the child received.

Mrs. Lambourn immediately sought to procure guardianship of the child's person and estate. Bedford entered a contest. The Los Angeles Trust Company was appointed the guardian of her estate and Mrs. Lambourn of her person. Bedford prosecuted an appeal but the higher court held that the decision was correct.

Mrs. Lambourn went into court yesterday with a petition for the adoption of her ward. Bedford gave his consent. The aunt assured the court that she intended to settle a fortune on her new daughter as soon as she should reach her majority, which will be in eleven years.

    • Mrs. Lucie Lambourn, aunt of Lucille Bedford, 5 years old, was appointed the guardian of the child's person by Judge Wilbur yesterday under a $5,000 bond. The court announce4d that he was appoint some trust company guardian of the child's estate, which will be about $125,000, as Mrs. Lambourn has expressed the intention of sharing with her niece the estate of the child's grandmother, Mrs. Susan G. Mitchell, which was left to Mrs. Lambourn, with the exception of $5. Charles Bedford, former husband of Mrs. Mitchell's daughter, who committed suicide in Arizona soon after the divorce, filed a contest of Mrs. Mitchell's will and applied for the guardianship of his daughter, Lucille. This petition was opposed by Mrs. Lambourn on the ground that the father was an unfit person.
