  • Notes
    • I found a Malcom Patterson on the 1841 census, age 18, living with Duncan Paterson, age 20, both born Argyle,Scotland. I can't yet determine if this is the correct Malcolm.

    • The 1851 census of Greenock, Greenock West parish has Elizth Paterson, married age 28, occupation "Sailmakers Wife," born Renfrewshire, Greenock; and Isabella Paterson, daughter, age 20 months; Jane, daughter, age 1 month; and Jane Arroll, sister, married, age 22. The address is 1 Kelly Street in Greenock, and living with her is her father Robert Brown, his sons William and James, his daughter Margt (Margaret), and a name that looks like Margt (Margaret?) Spence, servant, unmarried, age 12. All were born in Greenock, Renfrewshire.

    • The 1861 census of Glasgow Goven, county Lancashire, has Malcom Paterson, with no age, occupation, or birthplace listed; Elizabeth Paterson, age 39, wife, born Renfrewshire, Greenock; Isabella Patterson, daughter, age 11, occupation scholar, born Greenock; and Malcom Paterson, age 6. occupation scholar, born Greenock.

From wikipedia, Goven is a district and former burgh in the southwestern part of the City of Glasgow, Scotland on the south bank of the River Clyde. Shipbuilding was its principal industry in the 19th century. Goven gained burgh status in 1864, and was incorporated into the city of Glasgow in 1912.

    • Malcolm Patterson lived on Dorchester Street in Charlottestown, Prince Edward Island, Canada., He is listed in the 1880-1881 Charlottetown Directory as a clerk. He also appears in the 1881 census of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada in the district of Queens, subdistrict of Charlottetown Royalty, division 3, at age 66, occupation Sail Maker, and living with his daughter and son-in-law, Isabella (Patterson) & Richard George Hayes and their family.

    • Greg Hughes, researcher in Charlottetown, found this from "The Examiner" newspaper: "Died at Chelsea, Mass. at the residence of his son, on the 3rd inst, Mr. Malcolm Patterson, in the 67th year of his age [the deceased was for many years in the employ of A. Kennedy, esq. of this city]."

    • Malcolm Patterson is buried with his daughter, Isabelle, and her husband, Richard G. Hayes, and Isabelle's daughter, Grace, and her husband, Alfred Maggi.

Mabel G. Hayes is also buried there; she was the first wife of Walter Richard Hayes, Grace's brother, who later remarried, moved to Vermont, and is buried there.

Grace (Hayes) Maggi bought the cemetery lot in 1916. It is obvious that Malcolm's remains were moved from their initial resting place to this lot.

The years of birth and death carved on this stone are 1821-1888, and are in error. Malcolm's 1883 death record cites his age as 57 years 4 months, putting his birth at October 1825. The Canadian census cites his age as 66 in 1881, making his year of birth about 1815. Perhaps neither he (when giving his age to the census taker) nor the family (when completing the death record) actually knew when he was born or how old he was. Malcolm's birth year is likely to be closer to that of his wife in 1824.
